What is the “Field of Interaction”

May 19, 2010

What is the field of interaction or what is technically called the social field? Have you ever stopped by a teammate’s cubicle or office or ran into someone in the hall, and what was going to be a quick hello turned into this magical 45 minute encounter or you both experienced a change in the texture of the space and 90 minutes later an incredible direction and initiative was midwifed?

We all have experienced these situations. They are palpable, obvious and powerful. But what all these encounters have in common is they were unplanned, they surprised and delighted us and we would love to have them at will…but how?

These are examples of us experiencing a shift in the social field. The social field is comprised of what we see, say and do with each other – the visible interactions, and the origin and source from which the “see, say and do” come – the invisible.

When we come to space, and that would include online cyberspace environments, how we come to that space, the sense of being we bring determines how the see, say and do, “come across.” In other words it is just as much how we say it as what we are saying.

What we have come to know about the social field is there are four ways of being or four levels of listening, and one of them in particular dramatically shifts the social field. It is that way of being that creates that textural change and fosters those magical moments we all have felt but are at a loss to co-create.

So here is a question. Wouldn’t you love to increase the incidence of bumping into these sorts of social field shifts that have magical results and are so powerful? That is part of our goal here.

Here is our learning and new awareness today…the social field has two components what we see say and do – the visible and the origin and source or the see say and do – the invisible.

We are going to explore these dimensions and 4 ways of being in the next several posts.

I love the way you describe the moments. I’ve experienced this, but never considered the link to “way of being.” As always, love your insight!

I have a moment like this in mind that I had with a janitor where I work. I never listen to Yanni, but the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Yanni is the final sounds fo Beck’s Que Onda Guero (Guero which means pale-skinned or blonde-haired person – so translated means what’s up blond boy, or hey white boy) where the hipster macho mariachi’s giggles something like, i saw a “puppet, a tank, a mullet and a popsicle”, ……..”lets go to capricorn, they have the new Yanni Cassette.”
Which I have always taken as a white boy slam, that permenently cracks me up.
And by the way, this song is a great of example of a song that comes to know together.

but I eventually went away from my conversation with the janitor with a large, well very large, stack of yanni CD’s.

Somehow, I must have mentioned how I love playing the piano and they got to talking about their love for Yanni.

I could have never explained my Que Onda Guero reference to Yanni, although that was hands down the first thing that came to mind. But we went away, with something wonderful. I also feel joy when I see this person now.

But its not gone much beyond that and maybe it should, you have made me think there is more there than just chance, but I want to grumble and say its was just a common piano interest or just a fluke, but Yanni was delightful mockery previous, so I couldn’t really say that, and when all was said and done, I did feel like I got Yanni’s unconventional and very personal style of piano playing. So, I have been thinking there was a double surprise to this encounter.
